Bangladesh seeks Italy support for UNGA presidency bid

DHAKA, April 08, 2026 (BSS)- Dhaka today sought Italy’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature for the Presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly. 

The appeal was made when Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the foreign ministry today, said a foreign ministry press release. 
  
During the meeting, Migration and mobility featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides emphasized the need to promote safe, orderly and regular migration.

The state minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to working with Italy and other European partners to ensure effective migration governance and called for expanded regular migration pathways for mutual benefit.

The ambassador commended Bangladesh’s efforts to curb irregular migration and acknowledged the positive contributions of the Bangladeshi community in Italy.

Both sides also stressed enhanced cooperation on legal migration channels, skills partnerships and labour mobility aligned with market demands.

They agreed to expand cooperation in priority areas such as trade and investment, leather and ceramic industries, manufacturing, skills development, women’s empowerment, education, sports and cultural exchanges, private sector engagement and defence cooperation.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over the steady growth of Bangladesh-Italy ties, underpinned strong people-to-people contact.

The ambassador briefed the state minister on Italy’s position regarding the reform of the UN Security Council.

He congratulated the state minister on her recent assumption of office and expressed Italy’s confidence in further strengthening longstanding and friendly bilateral relations.
