DHAKA, April 8, 2026 (BSS) - Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Md. Nurul Islam today said the Jatiya Sangsad would have to pass the ordinances within the 30-day constitutional timeframe, and additional sittings, including Friday sessions, may be arranged if necessary to complete the task on time.

The Chief Whip said this while briefing reporters during a recess of the parliamentary sitting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban tunnel here today.

The Chief Whip said in line with the Article 93 of the Constitution, it is required that the ordinances should have to be passed within the stipulated 30 days. So far, 44 ordinances have already been passed, he added.

To expedite the process, Nurul Islam said several ordinances are being merged and placed in the House in the form of bills, adding that extra parliamentary sittings will be held and, if required, Friday sessions may be arranged both in the morning and afternoon to ensure passage of the ordinances within the deadline.

Regarding reserved seats for women, Nurul Islam said the BNP-led alliance is likely to receive 36 seats, which will be distributed among the alliance partners.

He said priority will be given to leaders who are qualified to become members of parliament under the Constitution, capable of effective participation in parliamentary activities, and who have proven their dedication and sacrifice during the last 17 years of political movements and struggles.

He also said importance is being given to ensuring representation from all segments of society, while the final nominations will be decided by the party chief.

Referring to allegations of irregularities and corruption in the parliament’s sound system, the Chief Whip said serious complaints have been received, including awarding work to an unskilled firm, supplying equipment inconsistent with specifications, and irregularities in the tender process.

He said necessary action will be taken against those responsible, but the measures will be implemented after the current session to avoid disruption to parliamentary proceedings.
On the implementation of the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Chief Whip said their political philosophy is based on avoiding revenge-oriented politics.

Quoting Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as saying, he said, “We will win the hearts of people through love,” adding that the prime minister considers himself the leader of all citizens, regardless of who voted for him.

The Chief Whip said justice will be ensured on the basis of the rule of law, and anyone found guilty will be punished under existing laws, while no innocent person will be harassed on political grounds.

He also said many members of the new parliament have long experience of political struggle, imprisonment and repression, and they are now committed to actively participating in the democratic process and contributing to nation-building.
